UWM welcomes prospective students and parents at bilingual open house

MILWAUKEE _ Prospective college students from three states and from cities across Wisconsin will attend UWM’s third annual Casa Abierta open-house event from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Roberto Hernández Center. The event kicks off in the Wisconsin room of the UWM Student Union, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.

The university’s signature Casa Abierta event focuses on inviting and welcoming prospective Latino students, who will soon be the fastest growing population of college-eligible students in Wisconsin. Currently, about 10 percent of UWM’s undergraduate student population is Latino.

“A college education is a major investment for any family,” says Alberto Maldonado, interim director of the Roberto Hernández Center. “But when you are sending the first child in your family to college, ever, as is true for many Latino families in the Midwest, you need extra information and access to feel confident in that investment.”

Casa Abierta offers attendees an opportunity to talk with admissions, financial aid and academic advisors in person and ask key questions. The day’s agenda also includes a resource fair, financial literacy workshop, campus tours and sessions on supporting undocumented students, writing a personal statement and career planning. A student panel and an address from UWM Chancellor Mark Mone round out the program.
