UWM students win NMDSI Student Scholar Awards

Twelve UWM students have been named as Student Research Scholars through the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI). They each receive a $2,500 award for research in AI and data science. They applied, along with their faculty members, who play a role as sponsor-mentors for the research.

The student research falls under the category of responsible AI and data, including ethics, bias and equity, and includes these three areas: 

  • AI Excellence: Applied & novel AI 
  • Talent Forward: Future-ready workforce 
  • AI Readiness: Economic vitality and financial security 

 Here are the UWM students who won fall awards: 

  • Walker Guzowski: “Supporting Gen Z and Gen Alpha Readers in an AI-Mediated Literacy Landscape,” with Shevaun Watson, associate professor of English 
  • Motakkabir Hossain: “Creating an AI-Enabled Analysis Pipeline for Audio Recordings of Health Coaching to Promote Physical Activity for Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis,” with Susan McRoy, professor of computer science 
  • Sharmin Islam: The Debunk That Wasn’t: How AI Systems Reproduce Disinformation Narratives While Appearing to Correct Them,” with Maria Haigh, associate professor in the School of Information Studies 
  • Sree Teja Katragadda: “Mapping Late-Life Suicide Hotspots: Deriving Latent Risk Patterns from Chronic Diseases, Prescription, and Socioeconomic Data using AI-Driven Geospatial Analysis,” with Priya Nambisan, professor of health care informatics  
  • Md Mahafuzur Rahaman Khan: “AI-Adaptive Serious-Game Robotic Rehabilitation for Personalized Home-Based Upper-Limb Recovery After Stroke,” with Habib Rahman, professor of mechanical and biomedical engineering 
  • Anthony Nguyen: “Machine Learning-Based Prediction of Hand-rim Forces During Manual Wheelchair Propulsion,” with Brooke Slavens, professor of mechanical and biomedical engineering 
  • Vanessa Oladipo: Social Determinants of AI-Enabled Wearable Adoption and Sustained Use Among U.S. Adults: Rural & Urban Differences,” with D. Phuong Do, professor of public health policy and epidemiology 
  • Sammie Omranian: “Developing and Validating an AI-Assisted Framework for Automated Fidelity Assessment of Brief Action Planning,” with Susan McRoy, professor of computer science 
  • Mohammad Assadi Shalmani: “A Multi-Agent Framework for Interpretable Heart Failure Risk Prediction from Literature-Grounded Clinical Graph Features,” with Jake Luo, associate professor of health informatics and administration 
  • Md Samiul Haque Sunny: “A Shared AI Framework for Clinician-in-the-Loop Monitoring and Decision Support Across Robotic Rehabilitation Platforms,” with Habib Rahman, professor of mechanical and biomedical engineering 
  • AmirSajjad Taleban: “Knowledge-Grounded Agentic AI for Explainable ECG Interpretation,” with Jake Luo, associate professor of health informatics and administration 
  • Tianyang Xiong: “Robust Traffic Measurements Through Roadside Cameras,” with Tian Zhao, associate professor of computer science
