UWM students ready to vote

MILWAUKEE_The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is encouraging students to exercise their right to vote, and all signs indicate students are ready to do it – in fact, some already have.

The university has created a website, uwm.edu/vote, to provide information on registering to vote, obtaining voter ID, and finding polling places.

“Universities play a vital role in helping young people develop civic identities and habits,” said Laurie Marks, executive director of the Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research at UWM. “For many students, their first chance to vote occurs when they get to college.”

Among the activities leading up to and including Election Day:

  • More than 1,200 students registered to vote at tables at several campus locations. A number of special registration deputies were students in political science professor Paru Shah’s class, “Multicultural America: Minority Voting Rights and Representation.”
  • Students took advantage of shuttles to Milwaukee City Hall to vote. The shuttles were provided by UWM’s Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research; the Student Association; the Student Association Professional Staff; and the Campus Election Engagement Project.
  • UWM’s Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research office and the Student Association are continuing to provide information to voters on a walk-in basis (explaining voter ID requirements, in-person registration processes).
  • UWM students participating in the Campus Election Engagement Project will be stationed at tables on Nov. 3 and 7 in the UWM Union Atrium, and again Nov. 7 and 8 in Sandburg Residence Halls, to provide candidate position information fliers and inviting students to the Gasthaus on election night to watch the results.
  • PantherCard will be in Sandburg Residence Hall on Election Day to print voter ID cards for students who were unable to obtain them earlier.

Many UWM students will be voting at three polling places around campus:

  • Students residing at Cambridge Commons Residence Hall will vote at the Urban Ecology Center, 1500 E. Park Place.
  • Students residing at Riverview Residence Hall will vote at Gordon Park Pavilion,1321 E. Locust St.
  • Student residing in Sandburg Residence Hall will vote in the Green Room on the first floor of Sandburg Residence Hall, 3400 N. Maryland Ave.
