UWM Police to offer first Citizens Academy in October

The UWM Police Department is launching its first Citizens Academy, a four-week program designed to provide citizens with a working knowledge of the UWM Police Department. The training runs each Thursday from 6-9 p.m., starting Oct. 6. It’s designed to show citizens a better understanding of the training officers go through, as well as the procedures. The program intends to foster positive communication, mutual understanding and support between the Police Department and the campus community. Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion at a graduation ceremony.

  • When: 6-9 p.m. on Thursdays, from Oct. 6-27
  • Where: UWM Klotsche Center, 3409 N. Downer Ave.
  • Topics: Some topics include traffic stops, use of force, arrest tactics, mental health, crime scene processing and a station tour.
  • Who can participate: UWM students, faculty and staff who are at least 18 years old, have no felony convictions in the last 15 years and have no current pending criminal cases
