UWM faculty member named ambassador for Mexican state

Gov. Miguel Márquez of the State of Guanajuato in Mexico has appointed Javier Tapia, associate professor in the School of Education’s Department of Educational Policy and Community Studies, as ambassador of Guanajuato to Wisconsin. The purpose of the appointment, Tapia explained, is to encourage his work in fostering collaboration between the two states and their universities.

Mexico is becoming an emerging economy and Guanajuato is playing a key role in that growth, Tapia said. Márquez recently met with Gov. Scott Walker, and the two governors agreed to foster a stronger relationship between the two states, including greater economic trade, partnerships and collaboration in education, health, and other areas of mutual benefit, Tapia said.

Tapia has been active with a local group seeking to establish a Mexican consulate in Milwaukee. The Mexican government announced in January it would establish the consulate though a date has not been announced.
