UWM Art Collection offers some surprising finds

UW-Milwaukee is home to an impressive, though little known, art collection of more than 7,600 items, ranging from Western to non-Western, ancient to contemporary.

The collection holds the work of such notable artists as Jean Arp, Joan Miró, Henry Moore, Victor Vasarely, Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso.

You can enjoy much of the UWM Art Collection online, and in exhibits in the Art History Gallery in Mitchell Hall.

The Art History department also offers monthly talks on noteworthy objects in its Art Exposé lecture series. Watch the department’s calendar to learn more.

Here are some items from the collection, with comments from Art Exposé lecturers.

Presenting each artwork are: Tanya Tiffany, associate professor of art history; Sarah Schaefer; visiting assistant professor of art history; Jacqueline Murphy, graduate student in art history; Christa Story, curator of the UWM Art Collection; Kay Wells, assistant professor of art history; and Richard Leson, associate professor of art history.
