The Transformative Power of Role-Play in Language and Culture Classes

Sandra Sousa, assistant professor of Portuguese at the University of Central Florida, will be presenting a workshop on the effectiveness of role-play as a new teaching method aimed at fostering student success in language and culture classes.

Her presentation will also discuss Mark Carnes’ book “Minds on Fire: How Role-Immersion Games Transform College” and propose it as a path to improve the teaching of language and cultural classes.

She will also discuss how games based on role-play can have a significant impact on the way students learn in the classroom, and be a transformative experience for students and instructors alike.

The workshop is sponsored by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, the Language Resource Center, and the Center for International Education at UWM.

Time: Monday, March 9, 1-1:45 p.m. or 2:15-3 p.m.

Location: Curtin Hall – B84 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
