A half-day program on Friday, Oct. 3, will focus on UWM’s progress toward Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) status. The program will be from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the UWM Lubar Entrepreneurship Center.
The program will feature a keynote address by Jacki Black on Latine student perceptions, faculty and staff strategies, and the “servingness framework.” In addition, UWM faculty member Gaby Nagy will present research on “Student and Staff Stories of Identity, Impact, and Institutional Change: The Role of the Roberto Hernández Center at an Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution.”
A hands-on session will give participants practical tools and actionable ideas to better support UWM’s growing Latine student population and all students across campus.
The morning’s agenda includes:
- 8:30-9 a.m.: Registration, breakfast and networking
- 9-9:30 a.m.: Welcome remarks & HSI updates, Alberto Maldonado
- 9:30-10:30 a.m.: Keynote address: “ Latine student perceptions, faculty and staff strategies, and the servingness framework,” Jacki Black of Edgewood College
- 10:30-10:35 a.m.: Break
- 10:35-11:35 a.m.: “Student and Staff Stories of Identity, Impact, and Institutional Change: the Role of the Roberto Hernández Center at an Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution,” Gaby Nagy, Toriah Haanstad and Norma Reyes
