New Organization: Bridging the Divide

A new organization is now at UW-Milwaukee for students, faculty and staff that focuses on creating a more united campus.

Bridging the Divide is a program that brings students of different ideological backgrounds together to foster civil discourse and reduce partisan division. The organization meets four times a semester to accomplish this goal. Each meeting includes a different set of topics that you get to discuss and learn about from peers. The outcome of each meeting is to learn, listen and bridge the divide between each other and our political differences. We replace snark with conversation, tweets with real talk, and scrolls and likes with face-to-face dialogue.

The next three meetings are on Oct. 15, Oct. 29 and Nov. 12, all at 6 p.m. in Holton Hall, Room G80.

Our organization isn’t just for prelaw or political science majors, it’s for everyone. Unfortunately, there is a lot of hatred and lack of understanding of each other that is tied to our political views. It’s scary to get involved and overwhelming to stay informed. As U.S citizens, it’s our job to try and be active participants in our government. Our organization is dedicated to helping you learn more about important political issues and how to discuss them in a civil way that doesn’t provide more division.

We don’t all need agree on political topics, but we need to be open to listening to others and learning in a kind and civil way.
