Major demolition work on old chemistry building begins in early January

Work on the demolition of the old chemistry building is progressing on schedule.

In early January, major demolition will begin on the building’s center section and the south wing and will continue through May 2026. This work will be noisy and dusty. To ensure safety, members of the campus community and visitors should not enter the marked, no-trespassing work areas.

UWM will be monitoring vibration in nearby buildings. If the levels are too high, workers will adjust their methods to reduce vibrations. The buildings potentially affected include the Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Building, Lapham Hall, the Architecture and Urban Planning Building, Kenwood Interdisciplinary Research Center and the new Chemistry Building.

Utility disconnections to the old chemistry building began in late November and will continue through the end of the year. This will involve brief electrical outages to other buildings at about 6 a.m. to facilitate disconnecting electrical from the old chemistry building. Campus electricians will send a notice ahead of the planned outages for specific buildings.

Steam, chilled water and IT disconnections are complete.

The site redevelopment is scheduled to begin in July 2026 and continue until August 2027.
