You’ve heard of the YMCA, but have you heard of the DMCA?
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) made it illegal to re-publish copyrighted electronic media by downloading, uploading, or file-sharing. Electronic media includes but is not limited to:
- Electronic textbooks
- Movies
- Music
- Software
- Video games
Organizations outside of the university can monitor our network and can take legal action against you if you download, upload or share copyrighted electronic media illegally while connected to the UWM Wi-Fi network. This can result in large fines, confiscation of hardware and lost time dealing with legal proceedings.
This video explains more of the risks of violating the DMCA in more detail.
For more information about the DMCA, check out the Illegal File Sharing section on Technology Resources’ cybersecurity page.
