High school chartered by UWM ‘improves lives of children’

Veritas High School – one of two UWM-chartered high schools – received the 2015 Martin F. Stein Champion For Children Award, named for Martin F. Stein, a Big Brothers Big Sisters member and philanthropist.

The annual award is presented to individuals or organizations that enrich opportunities for children through exemplary service to the community.

In honoring Veritas High School, Amy Chionchio, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee, said, “We have found an organization that lives and breathes ‘improving the lives of children.’ They do it every day. They do not seek recognition. They seek educational excellence. They seek success for every one of their students.”

Created in 1999, and now led by Director Adrienne L. Woods, UWM’s Office of Charter Schools is part of the School of Education. It charters 13 schools. Its mission is to cooperate with community organizations, parents, groups, educators and other individuals who are committed to improving the quality of education in the city to charter successful, innovative schools.
