Helpful tips offered during Cybersecurity Awareness Month

UWM IT dedicated the month of October to promoting cybersecurity awareness. Here are a few of the things we focused on:

We started off by talking about ways to spot phishing emails, specifically job scams.

  • Make sure you know the red flags.
  • If it is phishing, delete it or mark it as phishing in your inbox.
  • Never interact with it.
  • If you aren’t sure if an email is phishing, send it to abuse@uwm.edu.

Then we focused on vishing and phone spoofing. If you ever receive an unexpected phone call from an authority figure/reputable organization and you aren’t sure of its legitimacy:

  • Don’t provide any of the information.
  • Hang up the phone.
  • Contact them through official communication methods to verify.
  • Block the number if it is a scam.

Finally, we talked about the do’s and don’ts of illegal file sharing. If you aren’t familiar with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, make sure you learn about the potential consequences of downloading/distributing copyrighted materials illegally.

We hope you learned a thing or two about cybersecurity this month! For more information about cybersecurity best practices, visit our website.
