Governor visits UWM to highlight state funding proposal

UWM Director of University Housing Arcetta Clay Jones greets Gov. Tony Evers and Chancellor Mark Mone during their Tuesday morning tour of Sandburg Hall.

Gov. Tony Evers toured UWM’s campus alongside Chancellor Mark Mone Tuesday morning, stopping at Sandburg Hall and the Klotsche Center to speak with UWM students and employees.

Evers also toured UW-Green Bay and UW-Stevens Point during the day to highlight his proposal for more than $800 million of state funding for the Universities of Wisconsin, the largest such biennial budget proposal in state history. Evers has said the investment is aimed at preventing further cuts to UWs staff, faculty, campuses and programs.

At Sandburg, Gov. Evers learned more about the activities and facilities that make students’ “home away from home” as welcoming as possible. University Housing is at capacity this fall, and Sandburg alone is hosting more than 2,700 students.

Evers spoke with more staff and students at Klotsche, where they showed him the many activities available through the University Recreation program. The governor also toured Klotsche’s workout facilities and saw the new Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin (OHOW) Center, a 16,000-square-foot expansion to Klotsche that’s home to UWM’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.
