Film faculty, student showing work in pre-Oscar festivals

Two UWM film faculty members and a student will be featured in January at major film festivals.

Lori Felker, senior lecturer in film, and Ben Balcom, associate lecturer in film, will screen new works at the Oscar-qualifying shorts competition, Slamdance Festival, Jan. 21, in Park City, Utah. Felker will unveil “Discontinuity” as part of the narrative shorts program, and Balcom will present “Notes from the Interior” as part of the Experimental Shorts program

In addition, UWM graduate film student, Sky Hopinka, will his screen his short documentary, “Jáaji Approx,” at the Sundance Film Festival, also in Park City. Hopinka pairs audio recordings of his father speaking in his native Ho-Chunk language with landscapes separately traversed by both father and son to explore themes of memory, familial relations and indigenous linguistics.
