Photo Captions

For Top Stories and Photo Galleries

Cutlines, or photo captions, for top stories and photo galleries should be two sentences. The first sentence should be written in present tense and describe what is happening in the photograph, identifying those pictured and providing the time and location. The second sentence should put the photograph into context. The cutline also must include a photo credit, with the name of the photo owner and, when possible, individual photographer.

Examples:

Klaper and her colleagues at the Center for Sustainable Nanotechnology have received a $20 million National Science Foundation grant to help develop safer, more sustainable nanoparticles. For News in Brief and Secondary Stories

For News in Brief and shorter secondary stories, a one-sentence caption may look better. In that case, the sentence should be written in present tense and include appropriate context.

Book Excerpts

Introduction

Use <div class=”editors-note”> tags to format the introduction as an editor’s note. For example:

<div class=”editors-note”>
The U.S. census has for more than two centuries been an astonishing tool for America’s self-discovery. Margo Anderson, distinguished professor of history at UWM, shows the deep impact the census has had in the country’s life. The use of census data for military strategy during the Civil War is a remarkable example of the breadth of the census’ utility.
