UWM education professor Kalyani Rai visits her native Nepal often, but her most recent trip carried additional significance as she presented the nation’s prime minister with $60,000 raised in Milwaukee for earthquake relief.

Rai met with Sushil Koirala on July 17, asking the prime minister for assurances that the money – raised through the non-profit Milwaukee Nepali Pariwar – would be used in the rebuilding of schools in three remote villages in the eastern part of the country. The April 25, 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed 9,000 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless.

“I also expressed an interest to continue to support these schools in the future through a collaboration between the people of Nepal and the people of Milwaukee,” Rai said.

During her stay, Rai was interviewed on Radio Nepal about the Milwaukee Nepalese community’s earthquake relief efforts as well as her work at UWM.
