Nathan Derge, who is pursuing a bachelor degree in Political Science, and Halli Stewart, doctoral student in Urban Education, were chosen by the Tillman Scholars program – named for Pat Tillman, former Arizona Cardinals player who left the NFL in 2002 to join the U.S. Army. Family and friends established the Pat Tillman Foundation following his death in April 2004 while serving with the 75th Ranger Regiment in Afghanistan.

Stewart, of Racine, was also chosen as a UWM Tillman Scholar in 2015. She served for five years as a combat medic in the U.S. Army after joining the reserves at age 17. Derge graduated in 2010 from Lomira High School in Dodge County. He served with the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2012.

UWM is one of only 17 Pat Tillman Partner Universities in the country. Rae Anne Frey was UWM’s first Tillman Scholar in 2014.

Founded in 2008, the Tillman Scholars program supports active-duty service members, veterans and military spouses by investing in their higher education. The scholarship program covers direct study-related expenses, including tuition and fees, books and living expenses, for scholars who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate degrees as a full-time student at a public or private, U.S.-based accredited institution.
