Thomas Hooyer, associate professor in the Department of Geosciences, died May 4, 2016, following a battle with ALS. He was 53. Hooyer spent his career as a professor of Geology within the UW System, serving in the Wisconsin Geological Survey in Madison, conducting glacial geology research worldwide and, most recently, at UW-Milwaukee.

Members of the Department of Geosciences met at the Hubbard Park Lodge Tuesday in Shorewood for the annual Student Achievement Banquet. They celebrated Hooyer’s life and contributions that he made to the department and the university, and presented the first Hooyer Award to two graduate students.
Hooyer was raised in the mountains and was a life-long outdoors enthusiast. His travels associated with glacial research took him throughout the world and he enjoyed leading his students on research trips to Iceland.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Aug.6, at Crestview Christian Church in Boulder, Colorado.
