Aurora Health Care awarded the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee a $255,000 grant to create a comprehensive approach to sexual violence on campus by enhancing prevention, and expanding a response network, a bystander intervention program and support and advocacy services for survivors of sexual violence.
UWM’s grant was announced July 31. Aurora’s Better Together Fund, which supports sexual assault and domestic violence prevention and treatment programs, is providing the funding.
Julie Bonner, campus health officer and executive director of the Norris Health Center, and Sue McCarthy, interim director of the Women’s Resource Center, will lead the three-year UWM project. Bonner and McCarthy are members of the Chancellor’s Task Force on Sexual Violence Prevention, Reporting and Response, whose work is helping to build interdepartmental partnerships and the campus community’s awareness.
UWM is already addressing sexual violence through a range of programs, trainings and services for students, including support and counseling provided by the Norris Health Center and Women’s Resource Center, Bonner said, adding, “This grant will help us build and expand our sexual assault prevention, response and advocacy services.”
