Applications are now open for fall 2026 funding for student research scholars through the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI).
Research is focused on the recently refreshed Center of Excellence areas, which are connected through the foundation category of Responsible AI and Data (Ethics, Bias, & Equity):
- AI Excellence: Applied & Novel AI
- Talent Forward: Future-Ready Workforce
- AI Readiness: Economic Vitality & Financial Security
The student research program is open to part- and full-time instructors and faculty at UWM. If students have a research idea, they must seek an eligible faculty member to be a sponsor-mentor for the project to be eligible for funding.
Faculty play a critical role in mentoring and supporting proposal development. UWM instructors are encouraged to share this opportunity with students ahead of the July 12 application deadline. Award notifications are anticipated in mid-August.
