Matthew Desmond, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and sociologist and one of today’s most influential voices on poverty and inequality, will speak on campus at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, at the UWM Student Union, Wisconsin Room.
Desmond is the Maurice P. During Professor of Sociology at Princeton University. Renowned for his groundbreaking work on poverty and inequality, he is the author of “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City,” which follows eight families in Milwaukee. It won the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 2017.
His latest book, “Poverty, By America,” challenges conventional perspectives on poverty and exposes the societal structures that perpetuate it. Through his writing and research, Desmond seeks to ignite action toward greater economic justice and equality.
The event is free, but registration is recommended. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and a book signing will follow his talk.
