Maintenance work to temporarily close Downer Woods

The Downer Woods Natural Area, on the northern edge of UWM’s Milwaukee campus, will be temporarily closed to the campus community and neighborhood beginning Tuesday, Jan. 2.

UWM’s Saukville Field Station is overseeing a logging project that will remove about 200 dead ash trees from the 11.1-acre woods. The maintenance work will help enhance the safety of the area’s trails and protect the remaining native trees.

The logging work is scheduled to begin the first week of January and is expected to take five days. In the event of high winds or other unfavorable weather conditions, the work may extend until Jan. 23. The goal is to complete the tree removal before the start of spring semester classes.
