As we head into summer, the health and safety of UWM students remain top priorities. The UWM Police Department, Dean of Students Office, Student Health and Wellness Center and other offices across the university partner regularly with the Milwaukee Police Department and the city’s Department of Neighborhood Services to maintain a safe and vibrant environment for the campus community and our neighbors.
UWM reminds students to be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious behavior to police. The UWM Police non-emergency line, 414-229-4627, is answered 24 hours a day.
We also encourage people to take these precautions to reduce the chances of being the victim of a robbery or assault:
- Walk in pairs or groups, if possible.
- Don’t wear headphones while walking, day or night, and be aware of the noises around you.
- Don’t walk while using your phone, which is a distraction that can cause you to be an easy target.
- Always lock your vehicle, and keep valuables out of sight.
- Students are urged to download the Rave Guardian App to receive UWM Emergency Alerts and access other safety features. Students are automatically signed up for safety alerts via their UWM emails. In addition, they may opt in to receive text safety alerts.
- Individuals who aren’t affiliated with UWM also can receive emergency alerts via text from UWM. Text uwmalerts to 226787.
- Students can use UWM’s free ride service, B.O.S.S., from 7 p.m. until 12 a.m. daily in the summer. The service covers about 6 square miles beyond UWM’s campus.
- If you are the victim of a robbery, offer unconditional surrender. Valuables are replaceable, you are not!
