Department of Architecture Faculty meeting
AUP 345, 12:00 pm
Purpose of Meeting: [TALBOTT MOTION] Beginning in Fall 2019, each incoming freshman in
the Bachelor of Science in Architecture (BSAS)
program and each incoming 2‐year and 3‐year student in the Master of
Architecture (MARCH) program shall acquire a laptop computer for student’s
dedicated use. The laptop shall meet or exceed the Department of
Architecture’s hardware and software specification as published on the
year student enters the program. When student graduates from the
BSAS program and enters the MARCH program, student shall update or
renew the laptop to conform to the School’s specification at the time of
entry into the MARCH program. [10 min]
[BSAS MOTION 1] Addition of a required 300-Level Architectural
Systems course that focuses on Building Structures and Materials
to be added to the required BSAS curriculum. This proposed
course: Architectural Systems III, would be part of a three-semester
sequence and complement the content covered in Architectural
Systems I and II (Arch 301 and Arch 303). This course
would replace one 3 credit BSAS elective course. This change
would be implemented beginning Fall 2021.For 3-Yr M.Arch students,
this course could replace Arch 520.
[BSAS MOTION 2] Adjust the number of required architecture
electives needed for a BSAS degree to allow for the addition of required
studios and architectural systems courses. This would reduce
the BSAS architecture electives from 15 credit hours to 6
credit hours. This reduction would allow for a required 6 credit
600-level elective studio, and structures focused 300-level lecture
course. These changes would be implemented beginning in Fall of
2021.
[BSAS MOTION 3] Addition of one required elective/option studios
in the spring of the senior year. This will increase the
BSAS total number of studios from 5 – 6. This studio will provide
a senior capstone to the curriculum.
04 30 2018 Faculty Meeting Agenda 2
[BSAS MOTION 4] Beginning in spring of 2019 UG option elective
studios will shift from meeting three days per week to two
days per week. This adjustment will affect 650 courses offered to
students in the fall and spring of their senior year from meeting
three times a week for 4 hour per class to two times a week for 5
hours per class. This would change the typical meeting times to
Tuesday and Friday from 1:30 – 6:30.
[BSAS MOTION 5] Beginning in Spring 2019 DAR will provisionally
commit to a three-year (Spring Semester Only, two sections
min. per semester) BSAS option studio configuration that is
based on a team- taught split semester. This means that a 6
Credit Hour, senior option studio offered in the Spring will be divided
into two “mini-studios,” that are taught for ½ semester by
one faculty member and another ½ semester by another faculty
member. In terms of credit hours, the course would be equivalent
to teaching a seminar. Faculty would be able to teach twice
per semester, thus satisfying a core requirement.
[BSAS MOTION 6] Arch 390/790: Professional Representation
(Portfolio) will no longer be offered. This content will be covered in
the Visualization Sequence, Arch 282/283.
[40 min]
[ZELL MOTION] In order to promote even more discourse and celebration
during Thesis Day, all full-time faculty will be required to attend Thesis
Day as a reviewer. Faculty will be assigned to a thesis review session
whenever they are not reviewing their own thesis student’s work. If a fulltime
faculty member is not serving on any thesis committees, she or he
will be assigned to critique sessions and participate as a reviewer during
all of Thesis Day. [10 min]
[ZELL MOTION] to elect Mo Zell chair for AY2018-2019 [10 min]
