June 28 & 29 (Friday & Saturday)

Instructors:

M. Lee Olsen. Mr. Olsen has taught Great Lakes Indians Ethnobotany (EB) at UW-Milwaukee for 27 years. He has since been compiling a complete EB of all Native Americans of our area, including medicine, food, technology, and the plant language of the ten tribes from three language families. Mr. Olsen has an M.S. degree in Anthropology from UWM, specializing in paleoethnobotany of the Oneota Complex. Lee also collects and shows native ash & birch baskets, and demonstrates with fibers, weaving, dyes, etc.

The Course
This introduction to Ethnobotany will help you identify the native plants in our area and relate native uses, virtues, and names. In addition to several walks and demonstrations, you will have short labs with barks, seeds, and roots to appreciate basic traditional skills. Several teas will be sampled from the different habitats we visit. You will also be able to review ethnobotanical literature for your future research.
