Engagement beyond campus is a core part of UWM’s identity and mission. Community Empowerment & Institutional Inclusivity (CEII) helps coordinate and promote opportunities for UWM faculty, staff, and students to make a positive impact in the city of Milwaukee and the surrounding region through service, volunteerism, and other forms of civic participation.

To observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, members of the UWM community are encouraged to volunteer in local outreach activities on the holiday. The following day, there is a special program on campus to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King.

UWM earned the prestigious Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement in 2015 and has maintained that designation in 2020 and 2026.
