Language Table for the Greek-Curious

Thursday, February 16 2023 5:00pm - 6:00pm

Curtin 382

These informal gatherings are intended to give anyone who is interested the opportunity to take a look at some of the Greek texts that they are familiar with in translation. No knowledge of Greek is necessary, and lurkers are welcome. Also welcome is dropping in only once at some point during the semester.

For those who have studied Greek and would like the opportunity to apply what they have learned, they can try their hand at translating with as much guidance as they need. I will also have on hand the standard reference materials to aid translation, and we can practice navigating them a bit.

The gatherings will take place in Curtin Hall, room 382 from 5:00pm-6:00pm on the following Thursdays:

  • Thursday, February 16
  • Thursday, March 2
  • Thursday, March16
  • Thursday, March 30

  • Thursday, April 27

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Dr. Calkins (calkinsr@uwm.edu) if you have any questions or requests!

“Race,” Racism, and Representation in Ancient Italy: Aethiopians in the Visual Arts of the Roman Empire

Lecture by Sinclair Bell, Professor of Art History, University of Northern Illinois

Thursday, October 19, 2023
4:30 PM
LUBAR N140

Co-Sponsored by UWM Classics Program, Dept of Art History and Dept of Anthropology together with the Milwaukee Society of the Archaeological Institute of America.

The visual and material culture of the Roman Empire provides an abundant record of encounters with or simply imaginings of foreign peoples. These images render visible complex formulations of ethnicity, social hierarchies, and power. This lecture surveys the ways in which imperial artists represented the peoples whom the Romans referred to as Aethiopians or Nubians (i.e., “Black” Africans) in a variety of visual media. The lecture also considers how and why these works have been (mis)interpreted or sometimes altogether ignored by ancient art historians, and proposes new ways of integrating them into future, critical histories of Roman art.
