Areas of Interest
Dr. Sugiyama uses qualitative inductive methods to examine how social connections and the self-concept influence the workplace and career experiences of diverse individuals. Her research interests lie at various intersections of careers, identities, and diversity to answer a lifetime curiosity about how people’s perceptions and ways of relating to others are shaped and influenced by the interplay between their self-concept and their social context.
Professional Activities
Dr. Sugiyama’s research has been published in top management journals, including the Academy of Management Review, the Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Journal of Vocational Behavior. As a doctoral student, she also received the Arnon Reichers Best Student-led Paper Award from the Careers Division of the Academy of Management. Dr. Sugiyama is an active member of the Academy of Management in the Careers and Managerial Organization and Cognition Divisions, in addition to serving as representative-at-large in the DEI division.
