Labcorp / Ascension Health

(Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine)

NOTE: Labcorp has recently taken over the laboratory operations for Ascension Health.  Though the laboratories are run by Labcorp, they are still housed in Ascension hospitals.  The information below reflects organizational operations prior to this change, and are still in effect at this time.  At this time all Ascension tours and interviews will be conducted by the educational coordinator, and placement sites are to be determined.  Information will be updated as needed.

About the Organization

Ascension is a faith-based healthcare organization dedicated to transformation through innovation across the continuum of care.  Ascension has over 2,600 sites of care in 19 states and the District of Columbia, including 142 hospitals.  Laboratory operations for Ascension Health were taken over by Labcorp in 2022.  This change has not affected clinical placements or processes, but may be updated as needed.  The information below is subject to change if Labcorp chooses to change the process for student clinical placements.

How Many Students Do They Accept?

See each site for typical placement numbers.  During the transition to Labcorp, student numbers have been decreased, with all students rotating only at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital.

About the Sites

Ascension has a variety of sites available for student rotations, ranging from small hospital labs to a medium/large sized central lab.  Though there is coordination between sites for some rotations, each site is generally treated as its own entity, with its own education coordinator, tours, interviews, and rotation structure.  See each site below for more information.

Additional Information to Consider

With the exception of students completing rotations at Columbia St. Mary’s Milwaukee (CSM – Milwaukee), students completing clinical rotations with Ascension Health are typically required to attend additional sites for part of their rotation (see each site below for more information).  Due to the need to attend multiple locations, it is recommended that students attending rotations at any Ascension Health site (except CSM – Milwaukee) have transportation available. Students completing rotations with Ascension Health are only offered rotations within Wisconsin.

Ascension All Saint’s Medical Center – Racine (ASH)

Ascension All Saint’s Hospital – Racine is a full-service hospital with 24/7 emergency trauma center.  Students that intend to complete rotations with ASH are typically offered a tour at the hospital lab, which is located in Racine, WI, and complete interviews with their education coordinator.  If accepted, students complete the majority of their rotations at this hospital, but will be expected to complete some rotations in the Milwaukee area (additional rotations may occur at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee, Ascension St. Francis Hospital, and/or Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital – St. Joseph Campus).

Ascension All Saint’s Medical Center is not expected to take students for the class of 2025

Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee (CSM – Milwaukee)

Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee delivers tertiary specialty and 24/7 emergency care, and the laboratory located at CSM – Milwaukee has been designated as the central lab for all Ascension hospitals and clinics located in southeastern WI.  Students that intend to complete rotations with CSM – Milwaukee are typically offered a tour at the hospital lab, which is located close to the UWM campus in Milwaukee, and complete interviews with their education coordinator.  If accepted, students typically complete all rotations at CSM – Milwaukee.

Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Milwaukee typically accepts 2-3 students for clinical rotations each year from the UW – Milwaukee MLS Program.

Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee (CSM – Ozaukee)

Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee delivers specialty and 24/7 emergency care.  Students that intend to complete rotations with CMS – Ozaukee are typically offered a tour at the hospital lab, which is located in Mequon, and complete interviews with their education coordinator.

Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee is not expected to take students for the class of 2025.

Ascension St. Francis Hospital (SFH)

Ascension St. Francis Hospital is a full-service hospital with 24/7 emergency care.  Students that intend to complete rotations with SFH are typically offered a tour at the hospital lab, which is located in Milwaukee, and complete interviews with their education coordinator.  If accepted, students complete the majority of their rotations at this hospital, but will be expected to complete some rotations at other sites in the Milwaukee area (additional rotations may occur at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee, Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital – Elmbrook Campus, Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital – Franklin Campus, and/or Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital – St. Joseph Campus).

Ascension St. Francis Hospital is not expected to take students for the class of 2025.
