Biography
In a studio practice that prioritizes play and flow, Joel’s art documents experiences of altered states of consciousness achieved wholly through the action of art making. During the two decades prior to pursuing an MFA, Joel was a graphic designer and illustrator. Joel’s time as a freelance commercial artist solidified two interconnected personal axioms that exist at the core of his studio practice and his pedagogy. First, having a personal style that is authentic is hard to fake and positions artists in higher circles of their competitive realms. Second, an interdisciplinary education helps develop critical thinking and an exploration of perspectives which directly benefits—the other element important to artistic success—a point of view that matters.
