The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee prohibits the purchase, sale, and distribution of single-use plastic shopping bags on university lands.

“Single-use plastic shopping bags” mean any bags made of plastic material that are provided by a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee-affiliated store, department, organization, or employee at the point of sale or provided for the purpose of distributing or collecting goods at events on university lands. Included in this definition are shopping bags made from recycled plastic material and shopping bags made from biodegradable plastic material. Not included in this definition are plastic garbage bags or plastic bags used for the purpose of collecting trash, recycling, or hazardous materials.

Administrative support for this policy is carried out by UWM’s Office of Licensing and Product Development. Any requests for UWM logo licensing on plastic bags from any university or outside entity will be rejected on the basis of this policy.

Oversight for this policy is largely the responsibility of staff in Restaurant Operations’ Residential Operations and Retail Operations, but collective oversight will be given from the greater University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee community, including students, faculty, staff, and administration.

Notifications of violation of this policy will be directed to the Office of Licensing and Product Development, at which point measures to realign university behavior with this policy will be taken.
