About The Program

Students admitted to the Accelerated Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) Degree Program begin their master’s degree coursework in their senior year and take six graduate credits as part of the Bachelor of Science in Information Science & Technology (BSIST) degree requirement. The Accelerated MLIS allows students to shorten their MLIS degree to 30 credits while starting the program as an undergraduate, paying undergraduate tuition for those first 6 credits. It allows students to complete both degrees in less time at a reduced cost.

Students may continue their studies in the MLIS program immediately upon completing their bachelor’s degree or they may defer their MLIS degree start date for up to 5 years.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Information Science & Technology
  • 2.75 cumulative GPA or higher
  • Must be in progress to complete 105 bachelor’s credits prior to the first term as a graduate student.
  • Demonstrated professional experience (Ex: INFOST 408, INFOST 495, or professional information science experience)

How to Get Started

Complete the Accelerated Master’s Degree Declaration Form. Students may declare their intent for the accelerated program as incoming freshmen, continuing UWM students, or transfer students.

Schedule a meeting with your undergraduate advisor to determine your eligibility in the accelerated program and to discuss coursework and timeline.

After consultation with your advisor, you will register for two graduate-level courses (six credits) when you have reached senior status within your BS program. Note: To earn graduate credit for these courses, you must register in the graduate section of the course and meet all graduate-level and grade requirements for the course.

At the beginning of your last undergraduate semester, you must meet with Angie Sadowsky to formally apply to the Graduate School.
You should apply by November 1 to begin in Spring or April 1 for Fall to be eligible to enroll as a graduate student in the upcoming term.
