Winter Hike

February 6, 2022 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Free

Jim Reinartz (Field Station Director Emeritus) will lead the annual hike into the heart of the Bog. This is a 4-mile hike, and weather or snow and ice conditions can make this hike challenging.  In the past we have hiked in bitter cold, on a warm day with wet slush over the ice, in deep snow, with no snow at all on very slick ice, and when we were lucky, with a little snow over solid ice.  If ice conditions in the Bog are not safe, we will hike in the uplands instead.  The Field Station website will be updated several days prior to the hike with snow and ice conditions.

Update on Conditions for Winter Hike, Sunday, February 6

Ice cleats or traction devices are strongly recommended.  The ice is safe [i.e. no wet foot] all the way to Donut Lake.  In places the snow melted on Tuesday and has re-frozen into uneven very slick ice.  Long and Donut Lakes are also slick, uneven ice although there is a walkable fringe of crusty snow at the margins.  Bring your ice cleats or traction devices.  Wear safety glasses or sun glasses; we are not walking on a trail.  Be aware that conditions can always change, but it should be a beautiful hike on Sunday.

This event will be held outdoors.  The buildings will be open for use of restrooms.  Masks are required in the building.
