Yu on WUWM: New Milwaukee company working to treat wounds more effectively

Zeyun Yu and Sandeep Gopalakrishnan

Smartphones and artificial intelligence could be used to help people’s wounds heal faster.

Last week, Zeyun Yu, professor of computer science and biomedical engineering, and Sandeep Gopalakrishnan, assistant professor, UWM College of Nursing and Dr. Jeffrey Niezgoda, a physician and president and medical director of AZH Wound and Vascular Center in Milwaukee, were guests on WUWM’s show UWM Today to discuss their start-up company, MegaPerceptron.

The company is using AI and machine learning to help patients and healthcare providers make smarter decisions and enable remote woundcare. One feature: WoundApp, a smartphone-based app that allows individual users to capture, manage and process wounds images and depths on a phone, improving a clinician’s ability to monitor healing.

Yu’s and Gopalakrishnan’s research was supported in 2020 by a UWM Research Foundation Catalyst Grant and Discovery and Innovation Grant (DIG) award.
