Session 3
Speaker: Lilly Padía, PhD
Date/Time: Saturday, October 28 from 9:00 to 11:00 am
Title of Presentation: “Children Have Their Own Ways of Knowing Each Other”: Learning from Nonspoken Communication of Young Bilingual Children
Summary: This session introduces strategies and frameworks for educators to “listen” to and learn from the nonverbal communication practices and systems that children create and utilize. Drawing on an ethnographic study with nonspeaking bilingual children, their families, and their educators, we will identify nonverbal, multimodal languaging practices as pathways for educators to honor and uplift expansive communication in classroom environments. This session turns the lens on the educator as a perception partner to expand our own capacities to perceive the multiple ways that children express and share meaning with each other and with their teachers. We will look at examples from nonspeaking children labeled as disabled and identify how these communication practices–on the part of children and teachers–create a liberatory languaging space for us all.
