Candance Doerr-Stevens, Associate Professor in Teaching and Learning, and her students during a class lecture

Welcome to the UWM School of Education. We’re the state’s premier school for the research and practice of urban education.

Our mission is to prepare you to meet the social and economic challenges facing today’s urban, suburban and rural schools. We combine theory with practice, and students receive extensive hands-on experience before they graduate. We’re also led by a diverse faculty internationally recognized for scholarship, leadership and research.

Be Part of a Strong Legacy

The UWM School of Education has a proud history dating back to 1885. In fact, UWM was first established as the Milwaukee State Normal School specifically to train teachers in the area.

Today, you’ll find School of Education alumni working across all areas of education. Our students go on to become classroom teachers, administrators, researchers, school psychologists, sign language interpreters and leader-educators across social service agencies, government, business and more.
