Chancellor’s Update: Sexual Violence Prevention

new chancellor header

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,
As this new school year moves forward, it is important for us all to be aware that UWM is committed to preventing sexual violence, in all its forms. To advance this goal, many UWM departments are collaborating on projects to prevent and respond to sexual violence. Some examples include:

Over 99% of all full-time faculty and staff have completed an online sexual violence prevention training and newly-hired staff will receive this training within 30 days of beginning employment at UWM.

More than 94% of incoming freshmen completed the Fall 2017 sexual violence prevention training and Fall 2018 training is currently underway. Thus far, nearly 24,000 students have completed the training.

As part of a UW System initiative, 17 members of our faculty, staff and students are working with UW System to measure UWM’s campus climate and ensure victims of sexual violence are supported.

The Title IX Office holds monthly meetings to coordinate UWM’s institutional Title IX response, with participation by the Dean of Students Office, Student Association, University Housing, Equity/Diversity Services, Legal Affairs, UWM Police Department, Women’s Resource Center, Study Abroad Office, Athletics, Victim Advocacy, and Norris Health Center.

UWM Athletics and Greek life have partnered to engage in ongoing sexual violence prevention training for their student populations.

Beginning-of-the-year Title IX training is provided to staff in key areas such as University Recreation, Restaurant Operations, and University Housing Professional Staff and Resident Assistants.

Academic faculty and staff receive specialized training focusing on the Title IX responsibilities for Department chairs, Teaching Assistants, and new faculty.

Title IX and Victim Advocacy are being featured at tables during Campus Safety Week and UWM’s Sex and Drugs Show.
