Join us for an evening with Selina Trepp who will be in attendance at the screening.

Working and playing across animation, drawing, performance, installation, sculpture, photography and painting, Selina Trepp’s extensive and exciting practice is marked by vibrant color, ecstatic improvisation, close attention to economy, vitality and a true sense of the animating potential artists bring to the material world. Trepp joins us from Chicago for a screening and performance of her dynamic animations and performances.

Informed by ideas of improvisation, collaboration, and flux, Chicago-based artist Selina Trepp produces exuberant works from radically limited means. Since 2012, she has refrained from bringing new materials into her practice, instead recycling past artworks and remnants into each new project. Her animated films reflect the living and continuously evolving environment of her studio through their dynamic topographies and breath-like rhythms.

Selina Trepp is a Swiss-American artist living in Chicago. She explores economy and improvisation through performance, installation, painting, sculpture, photography, and animation. In addition to her studio-based practice, Trepp is active in the experimental music scene. In this context she sings and plays the videolah, a MIDI-controlled video synthesizer, which produces real-time animations. Trepp’s work has been exhibited internationally, and she is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Swiss Art Award and an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship. Trepp received a Master of Fine Arts from University of Illinois at Chicago in 2007.

Experimental Tuesdays is a weekly screening series that features the most celebrated work of contemporary and historical artist-made film and video. The series seeks to present films and artists that explore the creative and critical potential of moving images. This series amplifies marginalized voices by hosting artists that represent diverse populations, such as LGBT, Native American, Black and Latinx artists. Hosted by the Department of Film, Video, Animation & New Genres, and presented in partnership with UWM’s Union Cinema, this series is a bedrock of the Milwaukee arts landscape. Experimental Tuesdays has recently hosted the work of Silvia das Fadas, Courtney Stephens, Simon Liu, Helena Wittman, Jessica Bardsley, Suneil Sanzgiri, Mary Helena Clark, Angelo Madsen Minax, and Rhayne Vermette to name a few. This screening series is free and open to the public.
