Violins of Hope: Chamber Music Milwaukee – Music in the Times of War

Chamber Music Milwaukee presents a powerful program exploring music created in times of war, including works connected to the Holocaust and the resilience of the human spirit. The concert features faculty artists Todd Levy (clarinet)Bernard Zinck (violin)Elena Abend (piano), and Jamie Hofman (violin), joined by guest artist Adrien Zitoun (cello) from the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

The program includes Hans Gál’s Serenade for Clarinet, Violin, and VioloncelloErnest Bloch’s Nigun from Baal ShemBéla Kovács’s Sholem-alekhem, rov Feidman!John Williams’s Victor’s Tale, and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2.

As part of this event, Jamie Hofman, Director of the UWM String Academy, will perform on one of the historic violins from Violins of Hope, instruments restored from the Holocaust era and imbued with stories of survival. The concert will be preceded by a talk by Jewish educator Jody Hirsh, who will provide historical context about the violin being featured in the concert.

Founded in 2001 and based at UWM, Chamber Music Milwaukee has collaborated with many of today’s most exciting and important performers and composers. The series presents thematic programming that introduces innovative concert formats while exploring a broad diversity of repertoire. Featuring UWM music faculty and guest artists, the season typically presents five unique concerts. Join us as we engage with artists in imaginative and interactive experiences through ensemble performances and education.
