Biography

Annie Melchior has been a student and practitioner of yoga since the summer of 1995. She is a certified Iyengar yoga instructor, studied directly with the Iyengar family at Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India; and pursues advanced study and teacher training with teachers nationally and internationally. Teaching since February of 2001, Annie participated in the founding of the Milwaukee Yoga Center, and is a founder of Riverwest Yogashala in Milwaukee, WI. She has been recognized for her teaching, receiving the Milwaukee Shepherd Express Readers’ Poll “Best Yoga Teacher” award. She has taught at Riverwest Yogashala, Milwaukee Yoga Center, classes to UWM employees through the Work/Life Balance initiative, and is the Head of the Yoga Area in the Dance Department of the Peck School of the Arts at UW-Milwaukee, where she teaches yoga to hundreds of college students each year. In May of 2017 she published the article, Yoga and the Academy, in Yoga Samachar, the national publication of the Iyengar Yoga Association of the United States (IYNAUS). Annie has served on the Midwest regional board of IYNAUS), is a current board member of WildSpace Dance Company in Milwaukee, WI, and has shared yoga teachings and experiences with Milwaukee communities at Alice’s Garden Urban Farm and on Atwater Beach through the SurfRider/SurfAtwater activities. Annie is currently interested in exploring and expanding the benefits of teaching yoga to students of all ages, how yoga practices and principles can be used to improve overall performance and satisfaction in numerous settings (schools, workplace), as well as ongoing research on the benefits of yoga practice and meditation, and complementary practice of yoga with activities like (but not limited to ) bowling.
