Due to budgetary constraints that have negatively impacted the graduate programs in African and African Diaspora Studies, we are unable to admit any additional graduate students for the 2025-26 academic year.
Applicants must meet Graduate School Requirements plus the following departmental requirements to be considered for admission to the program:
- Undergraduate or graduate degree with a minimum GPA of 2.75
- A sample (10-15) pages of the individual’s written work
- TOEFL scores from non-native English speakers.
- At least three (3) letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar withthe applicant’s academic work’
Please note that the GRE is encouraged, but not required to be considered for admission to the PhD program.
Students must also apply directly to UWM’s Graduate School, and forward the requisite application fee in order to have their materials considered. Prospective applicants should visit the Graduate Schools website.
PhD Application Deadline for Fall Admissions
Completed applications must be received by December 1st to be considered for fall admissions.
