DAADS Ph.D. Student, Dalila Negreiros was recently awarded the American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowship for 2019-20. Negreiros is an activist and a researcher of policies for racial equality in Brazil. She holds a bachelor’s degree in geography and a master’s degree in development and public policies. In 2017 she published her book, “Educação das relações étnico-raciais: análise da formação de docents” (Education of Ethnic-Racial Relations: An Analysis of Teacher Training) published by the Federal University of ABC (UFABC).

From 2008-2017, she worked for Brazil’s government as a public servant, always on black population-relation issues. From 2008-2011, she worked to promote food security for traditional, indigenous communities, quilombolas, and between 2012-15, she worked at the Racial Equality Secretariat. Further, from 2015-17, she worked in the Human Rights Department in a program against torture.

Negreiros began her PhD in The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at UWM in Fall 2017. She is currently developing her dissertation proposal, which will present a comparative study of black studies in Brazilian and American Universities.
