Kettly Mars – “Parole-femmes — Women’s Words from and about Haiti”

April 12, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Kettly Mars

A conversation in English, and readings in French, Kreyol, and English on the occasion of the 1st translation into English of one of Mars’ works: Savage Seasons.

Kettly Mars is an award-winning novelist, poet, and short-story writer from Port-au-Prince. Her novels address such universal themes as gender relations and class issues in relation to the violence that power exerts. “For the past twenty years, through her extraordinary poems, short stories, novels, and essays, Kettly Mars has managed to put into words the deepest and most profound aspects of Haiti’s joys and suffering, its lyricism, and eroticism, narrating the daily lives and history of her country women and men in a language that is as lush as it is precise and as breathtaking as it is heartbreaking.” — Edwidge Danticat.

Sponsored by the UWM Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, UWM Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and UWM Department of French, Italian, and Comparative Literature.

Co-sponsored by Alliance Française de Milwaukee; Cultural Service of the Consulate General of France, Chicago; UWM Year of the Humanities; Special Collections, UWM Libraries.
