Every writer has the right to work with a tutor who…

  • is knowledgeable and trained in effective and ethical tutoring practices.
  • respects differences including ethnicity, race, gender, age, and beliefs.
  • allows writers to make final decisions regarding work and assignments.
  • behaves professionally and ethically with writers during their sessions.
  • maintains Center policies that promote fair and quality tutoring for all writers including those regarding scheduling, cancellations, space, noise, cleanliness, and sobriety.
  • informs the Director or the Assistant Coordinator if a problem arises.

Every Tutor

Every tutor has the right to…

  • be treated respectfully by writers and fellow staff without regard to differences of ethnicity, race, gender, age, or beliefs.
  • be acknowledged as a writing tutor, not an editor, proofreader, translator or instructor.
  • work with writers, not for them, and encourage them to think independently, to learn, to improve and produce their own best work.
  • expect writers to respect Writing Center policies that promote fair and quality tutoring for all including those regarding punctuality, scheduling, cancellations, space, noise, cleanliness and sobriety.
  • be comfortable telling writers, “I don’t know, but I will find out.”
  • confer with the Director or Assistant Coordinator regarding writers, assignments or policies, or if a problem arises.
