When the writer channels frustrations with his kooky neighbors into fodder for a new screenplay, the vivid murders he imagines start to happen for real, and the line between fiction and fantasy begins to smear. A singularly charming tribute to Old Hollywood and a marvel of low-budget, high-concept filmmaking.

  • We Can’t Go Home Again

UWM Student Union (UN) 2200 East Kenwood Blvd., Milwaukee, WI, United States

Made with his students in upstate New York, Nicholas Ray's experimental masterpiece embodies the director’s practice of filmmaking as a communal way of life, featuring Ray variously as mentor, friend, and index to his students' stories of love, rebellion, and lost innocence.  Reconstructed and restored from its 1973 release, the film's unique, almost anthropological approach to multiple-image storytelling, records the history, progress, manners, and mores of everyday life at a critical moment in 1970s America.

  • In a Lonely Place | 35mm print!

UWM Student Union (UN) 2200 East Kenwood Blvd., Milwaukee, WI, United States

When a washed-up screenwriter with a hair-trigger temper (Humphrey Bogart) becomes prime suspect in a Tinseltown murder, his only alibi is a seductive neighbor (Gloria Grahame) with her own troubled past. Nicholas Ray's emotionally charged thriller is a turbulent mix of suspense-wracked noir and devastating melodrama. An uncompromising tale of two people desperate to love in spite of their demons, one of the greatest films of the 1950s and a benchmark in the career of the legendary Hollywood auteur.

  • Minamata Mandala

UWM Student Union (UN) 2200 East Kenwood Blvd., Milwaukee, WI, United States

Filmed over fifteen years, this six-hour epic by documentarian Kazuo Hara chronicles the history of struggle for a fishing community suffering from a debilitating neurological disease caused by industrial methylmercury contamination of fish as they wage a decades-long battle for legal recognition and government reparations. A deeply humanizing portrait of the survivors, care providers, researchers, and their supporters, and a comprehensive chronicle of one of the worst environmental tragedies in human history.
