We Can’t Go Home Again

Made with his students in upstate New York, Nicholas Ray’s experimental masterpiece embodies the director’s practice of filmmaking as a communal way of life, featuring Ray variously as mentor, friend, and index to his students’ stories of love, rebellion, and lost innocence.  Reconstructed and restored from its 1973 release, the film’s unique, almost anthropological approach to multiple-image storytelling, records the history, progress, manners, and mores of everyday life at a critical moment in 1970s America.
