Emergency Preparedness
In the case that someone you know or don’t know needs an AED or CPR, we will give you the skills to save a life.
Unfortunately this is a current reality that we all face. Let us teach you what to do in order to survive a situation like this.
This course is intended for those employees who are identified as Building Chairs, Floor Captains, and others who are designated to assist in conducting fire drills on campus. This course will cover fire safety, procedures, and what is expected for those who assist with the drill.Training Frequency: For Building Chairs and Floor Captains upon taking the volunteer position and every year thereafter. Training to be held prior to the drill.
Learn how to identify the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose and how to properly administer the opioid overdose reversal drug “Narcan.”
This course is intended for those employees who are identified as Building Chairs, Floor Captains, and others who are designated to assist in conducting fire drills on campus. This course will cover tornado safety, procedures, and what is expected for those who assist with the drill. This course will NOT cover how to use the fire panel to make announcements as each building has a different system. Please take the time to learn how to use the panel prior to the drill.
Training Frequency: For Building Chairs and Floor Captains upon taking the volunteer position and every year thereafter. Training to be held prior to the drill.
Human Subjects / IRB
This online, self-paced training course provides the fundamentals of ethics and regulations governing research with human subjects. It is required for all PIs and Student PIs conducting human subjects research.
Total time: ~4 hours
This short, optional course covers the basic regulations and underlying ethical principles of human subjects research, as well as an introduction to the IRB at UWM

Laboratory Safety
This course is a refresher training for laboratory safety and chemical hygiene plans. This course is offered in-person and synchronously online. Click the link below to sign up for the next available course offering.
Training frequency: annually after completion of the Introductory Lab Safety and Chemical Hygiene Plan Training
This training will inform you of the Lab Standard and the Chemical Hygiene Plan elements, proper use of the CHP for safety in the lab, and how compliance is achieved. In addition, General lab safety information and procedures will be discussed. This course is offered in-person and synchronously online. This training reviews important safety precautions for individuals who work with lasers.
Occupational Health
A comprehensive course to explain what asbestos is, the difference(s) between “friable” and “non-friable” asbestos, the health effects relating to contact, procedures for controlling and reporting asbestos exposure, and the identification of building materials containing asbestos. This course is meant for anyone who does not perform abatement tasks, but occasionally works around asbestos.
Training Frequency: Upon hire and every year thereafter.
Designed for those who are at risk for on the job exposure to blood and other bodily fluids in the workplace. The course teaches staff how bloodborne pathogens are spread, how to avoid exposure and what to do if exposed to infectious material. After taking this course, students should talk with their employer about their workplaces specific policies and procedures.

This course is intended for anyone who conducts or coordinates facility maintenance or remodeling (other than people who conduct actual lead abatement or remediation). The Lead Awareness training will cover what lead is, where it comes from, its properties, and its historical perspectives. Upon completion of the course, users should be able to identify common materials that may contain lead or lead compounds.

Occupational Safety
This course will discuss the proper way to report a workplace injury as well as how to conduct a comprehensive investigation. This training will discuss items to think about when injuries happen, possible ways to mitigate future similar injuries from happening, and other aspects of workplace investigation.
Training Frequency: For new supervisors or receiving promotion; every 5 years thereafter.

This course will discuss how to properly lift items to reduce back injuries. You will also learn how to conducted material handing operations when pushing or pulling items. You will also learn what measure you can use to safely transport materials with the use of dolly, carts, etc.
Training Frequency: Upon hire and every 3 years thereafter
This course discusses procedures to protect employees who work in confined spaces with limited or restricted access. Confined spaces include, but are not limited to, underground vaults, tanks, storage bins, manholes, and tunnels. This course addresses how to protect employees from the hazards posed by working in or around confined spaces, including requirements for training, identification and assessment of confined spaces, and rescue.

Authorized Worker training is designed for those who are working at heights and using fall protection equipment on a regular basis. This course will usually include hazard recognition and elimination, regulations, procedures, and hands-on demonstrations.
Training Frequency: Upon fire and 3 years thereafter.
This training is designed to provide the knowledge of OSHA regulations and to help prepare your operators for safe driving practices with powered industrial trucks. You’ll dive deep into what it takes to keep yourself and pedestrians around you safe while learning new lift truck skills you can immediately apply to your job. This training involves online classroom theory and a hands-on training evaluation that is tailored to the exact lift trucks you operate.
Your supervisor shall give you time to operate the forklift under their supervisor until you feel confident. The observation and certification approval will be done by a qualified evaluator.
Training Frequency: Upon supervisor approval. Operator use – every 3 years thereafter from the date of completion. Classroom – every 5 years thereafter.
This course covers the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). You will learn about GHS pictograms and hazard classes and how to read chemical labels and safety data sheets. This course should be taken by anyone who works with chemicals.

This course is intended for those who want to conduct a risk assessment for specific tasks within the workplace. You will learn the various safety measures to reduce or eliminate risk, identify requirements for personal protective equipment, and potential required training for the task(s).
Training Frequency: Upon Hire and 3 years thereafter for supervisors who oversee workers that work in isolation and high hazardous positions.
This training course designed to teach the participants how to correctly and safely use ladders. This course is aimed at those who are either required by their job duties to use ladders regularly or those who are just occasional users of a ladder.

Using machine shop equipment and tools may be hazardous. This course will teach you about personal protective equipment, machine guarding, and recommended safety policies.
Training Frequency: Upon hire and every 3 years thereafter. This presentation is geared for shop and lab workers in areas that contain saws, lathes, and other various types of machines.
This training discussions the most common types of extinguishers, selection of proper fire extinguisher and proper fire extinguisher usage. You will also learn basic fire science and emergency procedures. For building specific information, please review floor plans located inside each structure. Hands on training is available via request (please have a least a group of 5 employees for this section).
Training Frequency: Yearly for RAs, First Repsonders, and UWMPD. Upon hire and every 5 years thereafter for those who may use them.
The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) training is a basic guide to common laboratory PPE and their uses. This training will cover general recommendations for appropriate PPE, where to find lab procedure specific PPE requirements, when PPE should and should not be used, and knowing the different types of PPE and the hazards they protect against.

This course is intended for new employees to learn about UWM’s Safety and Assurances Department. You will also learn about the process to file a workplace injury, safety training, and other aspects of the department.

This training prepares workers to recognize and avoid a wide range of safety hazards associated with supported scaffold use. You’ll learn about the importance of safety controls, fall prevention equipment, inspections and emergency planning. This training does not certify you to erect and dismantle scaffolding on your own.
Scaffold Competent Person training must be conducted by a qualified trainer.
Training Frequency: Scaffold User: Upon hire and every 3 years thereafter.
This course is intended to discuss ways to prevent injuries due to slips, trips, and falls. You will also learn what the causes of slips, trips, and falls due to various types of conditions. Finally, the course will advise you on what to do to walk properly, paying attention to your surroundings, and others.
Training Frequency: Upon hire and every 2 years thereafter.
Radiation Safety

This training provides continuing education to Radiation Workers, Lab Workers, and Authorized Users who work with open-source Radioactive Materials.

Risk Management
This course is intended for those employees who are designated to drive UWM vehicles. This training will discuss the following: Distracted Driving, Road Rage, Winter/Severe Weather Driving, Procedures, and more.
