My Adventure in the Stratosphere

Jean Creighton, Director – UWM Manfred Olson Planetarium

Physics – Room 135

Recently, NASA selected me to be one of the 24 Airborne Astronomy Ambassadors, aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). We were described as “Junior Varsity” astronauts during our safety training. We met enthusiastic and committed scientists, engineers, and administrators who make ambitious projects such as SOFIA successful.

I am delighted to share with you my experiences of flying at 45,000 feet in a modified 747 equipped with a 100-inch infrared telescope.
