Some Recent Novelties in Magnetism: Metamagnetism, Nonlinear Response and Multiferroics
Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Dept. of Physics, University of Florida
Physics – Room 135
Metamagnetism, a term coined by H. A. Kramers, refers to the rapid rise in magnetization at some critical field. This quantum transition at T=0 is found in heavy fermions, transition metal compounds and most recently in molecular magnets.
We discuss the connecting links of concepts as well as reference to materials in diverse contexts. This work, a collaboration with the experimental program of B. Shivaram of the University of Virginia involving a study of the magnetic properties of the materials UPt3, also discusses earlier work by Bimal K. Sarma on that heavy fermion compound.
